Speakers of English have an ingrained cultural tendency to assume responsibility for their actions. When we drop something, we say, “I dropped the book.”
Speakers of the various romance languages typically say, “The book fell from my hand.” This choice of words shifts the responsibility to the inanimate object. Rather than looking to oneself as the explanation for an action or event, they look elsewhere, and use more words in the process.
