One of the responsibilities of professional appraisers is to understand the big picture, the really big picture. We need to understand in context everything there is about culture, economics, geography, design, architecture, etc. so that when we encounter an object we are able to identify it accurately. Traveling is invaluable because it exposes us, all of us (you too), to what we have not seen before so that when we see something out of context, we are able to recognize it. This is me on the Greek island of Crete. It is here where the first civilization in the Old World first appeared: The Minoans. It is they who were probably the people of the legendary Atlantis. And this enchanted land was destroyed by volcanic cataclysm ~1500 B.C. Today a remnant of Atlantis remains and is called Santorini.
